The Hotel-class nuclear submarine was a type of ballistic missile submarine used by the Soviet Navy and was the first of its kind to be equipped with nuclear power.
There are three subtypes of this ship, Type 1 to Type 3, and eight of them were commissioned between 1960 and 1962. Developed as a successor to the conventionally propelled Golf-class submarines, the Hotel 1 had the drawback of only being able to launch ballistic missiles when surfaced. In the 1960s, all vessels were converted to the Project 658M vessels (Hotel 2), equipped with the R-21 submarine-launched ballistic missile capable of being launched underwater.
